The following is a guideline as to how to rank yourself according to risk. It is by no means a complete checklist for how insurance companies rate your risk level . Many additional factors are involved and vary depending upon the insurance companies underwriting methods. The "Recommended Provider" is the quote search service that , in our experience, offers the best rate in your state.
* A "Preferred Risk" driver can answer yes to the following questions:
- No Accidents or Moving Violations in the Last 3 Years.
- Good to Excellent Credit. No problems receiving credit.
- No past license suspensions, DUI's, etc.
- Continuous insurance coverage history. No lapsed or terminated policies
- At least 25 years old.
** A "Standard Risk" driver can answer yes to the following questions:
- Only 1-2 moving violations or 1 "at fault" claim in the last 3 years.
- Average or better credit. Some minor credit problems.
- No past license suspensions, DUI's, etc.
- Continuous insurance coverage history. No lapsed or terminated policies
- At least 21 years old.
*** A "High Risk" driver may have one or more of these characteristics:
- 3 or more moving violations or 2 or more "at fault" claims in the last 3 years.
- Poor credit, bankruptcies, large number of defaults.
- License suspensions, DUI's, SR22, etc.

- 16-21 years old.
Please Note: Although the recommended free services are categorized by risk level, it may be beneficial for you to try the next higher category . For example, if you rate yourself a "high risk" , then get quotes from the "standard risk" as well as the "high risk" recommended providers. This will give you more options from which to choose when comparing rates, thus saving you more money!
In Massachusetts, we've found comparison market to be the best choice for "Standard Risk" drivers and higher.
Remember, all quotes you receive are absolutely free with no obligation to purchase a policy.
