Every 20 seconds a vehicle is stolen in this country (USA). Professional thieves can steal any car, but you can make your vehicle a less likely target. Be smart and follow the layered approach to protection.

• Layer #1 -- Common sense. This is the simplest and most cost-effective means of protection. An unlocked vehicle with a key in the ignition is an open invitation to any thief.

  Always lock the doors and close all your windows.

  Never leave the key in the ignition or leave the car running and unattended for even a short time.

  Keep contents and valuables out of sight under the seat or locked in the trunk.

  Record your vehicle identification number (VIN) number in a safe place.

  And if you have a garage, use it and always park in well-lit areas.

• Layer #2 -- A visible or audible device that warns thieves that your vehicle is protected.

  Popular devices include audible alarms , steering wheel locks or collars, wheel or tire locks , theft-deterrent decals, ID markers on the car such as the VIN etched on the windshield and laminated glass.

• Layer #3 -- An immobilizing device that keeps thieves from bypassing the ignition system and hot-wiring the vehicle.

  These devices include smart keys and high-security locks, fuse cut-offs and kill switches and ignition and fuel disablement.

• Final Layer -- Tracking device that sends out a signal when a vehicle is stolen.

  These devices are very effective in recovering stolen vehicles.

So think layers! The more you have the safer your vehicle will be.
