Colorado Health Insurance Exchange
The Colorado health insurance exchange is currently being implemented. Colorado, like many states, are in the process of developing plans to set up a health insurance exchange in order to comply with the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act by the deadline of 2014.
As details on the exchange emerge, we will update our information. A good overview of the Colorado health insurance exchange including details on who will have access, how the exchange will be structured and what function it will perform as well as details on subsidies for low income residents can be found on colorado.gov. A summary of conclusions from this report are below:
"..The Exchanges established by PPACA are designed to be settings in which qualified individuals and families
and small businesses can purchase health insurance coverage that meets certain rules relating to affordability,
required benefits, and market standards. People who do not have access to employer or public coverage will find
choices in the Exchanges, with standardized benefit options that make comparisons easier. Premium and costsharing
subsidies will be available to help low- and modest-income people finance their coverage. The Exchanges
also will provide settings in which insurers and plans can be monitored to assure that they conform to consumer
protection rules that go beyond current insurance market regulations..."On June 1, 2011 , Gov. John Hickenlooper signed senate bill SB200 into law which authorizes the implementation of the Colorado Health Exchange. The exchange will be independently operated and will be funded by grants, donations as well as the federal grant. A nine member board will oversea the implementation of the exchange. The majority of the board will represent small business and have experience in health insurance benefits. The health insurance industry will not be allowed to have majority representation on the board.
